Dr. Stephen
C. Bednarzyk
Stephen Bednarzyk is currently in his fifth season as Music
Director & Conductor of Guam Symphony and Chorale. He has been
featured as a conductor and performer in the United States,
Japan, Australia, Saipan, and Guam. As Music Director &
Conductor of the GSS, Dr. Bednarzyk programs and conducts all of
the concerts performed by the GSS, including the Musika Famugon,
or Children’s Concerts, which annually reach over 2,000 of
Guam’s fifth and sixth graders.
During his tenure with the GSS, Dr. Bednarzyk has conducted and performed in
over 50 concerts of all genres, including Classical, Pops, Children’s and
Chamber Music concerts. In addition, he has implemented Pre-Concert Talks,
created the Guam Symphony Chamber Players, and increased the size and scope of
the GSS Young Artists Competition. Dr. Bednarzyk also frequently appears on
various radio talk shows and speaks at several functions during the season to
promote both the GSS and classical music on Guam.
In the spring of 2003, Dr. Bednarzyk was granted status as an Assistant
Professor of Music at the University of Guam. He is currently in the process
of recruiting and creating the UOG Concert Band. His other responsibilities at
UOG include teaching instrumental conducting, music theory and sight singing,
and serving as an accompanist for many of the students.
A Massachusetts native, Dr. Bednarzyk holds a Bachelor’s of Music Degree in
Clarinet Performance from the New England Conservatory of Music. He received
his Master of Music and Doctor of Music Degrees in instrumental conducting from
the University of South Carolina, where he also received the Outstanding
Graduate Student in Music Award. He currently resides in Guam, where he lives
with his lovely and talented wife, Michelle Lee Bednarzyk.
