2008 YOUNG ARTISTS COMPETITION

GOALS

The goals of the Guam Symphony Society Young Artists Competition are threefold:

1.     To select talented young musicians to perform on the Young Artist recital at the Symphony     Harmony Fair and possibly with the Guam Symphony Orchestra.

2.     To afford young musicians the opportunity to be judged by artists of recognized standing.

3.     To promote a professional standard of performance through the experience of a competitive forum.

ELIGIBILITY

1.     Open to all singers, instrumentalists, and pianists age 25 or younger.

2.     Completed application form must be received no later than two days before the date of the competition.

3.     The winners must be available for rehearsals and publicity as required.

LITERATURE

1.     Acceptable literature for the competition includes any one movement from any work in the standard repertoire.

2.     Transcriptions or arrangements are not encouraged unless transcribed by the original composer.

3.     Memorization is preferred but not required.

4.     Selection may be as short as you wish, but must not exceed 15 minutes.

5.     No accompanists will be provided

CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION

1.     Tone and Technique (rhythmic precision and dynamic contrast)

2.     Interpretation (expression, phrasing, style, and tempo)

3.     Musicianship and Presentation (preparation and stage presence)

COMPETITION FORMAT

1.     The competition will be held Friday, January 26th , 2007 at the University of Guam College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences (CLASS) Lecture Hall.

2.     The competition will begin at 7:00PM.  Entrants will be notified of their approximate performance time at least one day before the date of the competition.

3.   There will be three divisions for entrants:

  • Youth (up to 6th grade)

  • Junior (7th - 10th grade)

  • Senior (11th grade - college)

4.    The competition is open to the public. 

5.     The Guam Symphony Society reserves the right to amend the competition based on the number of registered competitors.

PRIZES

1.     Winners will be afforded the opportunity to perform on the Sounds of Chamber Music Recital on February 17th and 18th.

2.     At the discretion of the Judges, a special top prize will be awarded which will include an opportunity to perform with the Guam Symphony Orchestra.

FEES       

        An application fee of $25.00 is required of all entrants.
